Woodhouse the victor in Rotherham rumble

DAILY SPORT were in Rotherham on Friday night for a great nights boxing staged by our very own boxing expert and columnist Dave Coldwell. Top of the bill at the packed Magna Centre were local hero Curtis Woodhouse up against Derby’s Dave Ryan for vacant English Light-Welterweight Title and what a cracking 10 rounder this turned out to be. Both guys started fast and by the end of the second round I had them level 1 a piece, then in the second Woodhouse dropped Ryan but he came back well and from then on the fight was a pretty close affir with most of the rounds 50/50. Woodhouse won the 9th and then in a toe to toe war for me Ryan won the last. I scored it 98-96 to Woodhouse with the 2 Judges giving it to Woodhouse 96-94 and 95-94 and the third judge seeing it a draw 95-95.

Chief support was Lightweight Maxi Hughes v Ibrar Riyaz which recent DAILY SPORT interviewee Hughes won every round on the referee’s scorecard end the 6 round 60-54 by the end of the 4th Hughes was getting on top of his game opponent.

Sheffield Light-Welter Joe Rodgers made it 3 and 0 beating Sid Razak 40-46 over 4 rounds much to the delight of the big support he’d bought with him. There were 2 local lads making their pro debuts at the Magna first up was Light-Middle Rod Smith who took just 2.14 seconds to dispose of Jerome Samuels flooring him twice on the way and Light-Heavy Jamie Hughes stopped Joe Jones is just 44 seconds after putting the Welshman down with a straight right hand, so 1-0 to Hughes in the pro ranks.

Rotherham Cruiserweight Karl Bell took his pro record to 4-1 after stopping Zahid Kahut in the 3.00 of the 3rd round, Bell looked good in there but must start to work on his defence at little more.

Lightweight Leigh Wood got a win over Chuck Jones with the Welshman retiring on his stool at the end of the 1st with an injured right hand and Jason Cunningham beat Delroy Spencer over 4 rounds 40-37 in their Bantamweight contest.

Daily Sport says – All in all a great nights boxing at a packed venue and welldone to all at Coldwell Boxing and also to Su Casa the sponsor of the main event for the after party.
