Phil’s Magic looks to have been  given a big chance by the handicapper and makes plenty of appeal at 16/1 in the 4.20 at Punhcestown today.

Sandra Hughes’ gelding has some useful form to his name over hurdles when winning twice, and in the last of those successes in a Listed contest at Naas beat subsequent Grade 1 winner and now 159-rated Prince Of Scars.

The six-year-old has had three runs over fences this season, and ran well in the last of those when third to Killultagh Vic at Fairyhouse back in December.

Those runs qualified him for a chase mark, and he now gets in this off a rating of 129.

That looks lenient judged on his win over Prince Of Scars and the fact that he was rated 133 over the smaller obstacles.

It’s also interesting that connections have presumably kept him fresh for this believing that he is well-treated, and Phil’s Magic also gets the services in the saddle of Jack Kennedy who is terrific value for his 3lb claim.

Taking it into account, Phil’s Magic looks weighted to run a huge race.
