Love Island Finalist Megan Barton Hanson meets fans at Worship your WooWoo meet and greets at Superdrug to talk about sexual health and pleasure

Love Island Finalist and Megan Barton Hanson joined forces with sexual health and beauty brand WooWoo this week to encourage young women to open up and talk more about their sex lives and sexual health.

The Worship Your WooWoo campaign fronted by Megan aims to break down the barriers and taboos surrounding sex to help young women feel more comfortable talking about their sexual health, less worried about their sexual history, and more focused on their sexual pleasure.

Woo Woo launched the initiative in response to figures released by Public Health England which suggest a shocking rise in sexually transmitted infections, particularly in young adults.

Modern attitudes to sex including advice on sexual health were discussed at a round table debate attended by Megan and a panel of experts, and a series of meet and greets at Superdrug this week.  The events were devised as part of the awareness campaign launched by WooWoo after research by the beauty brand revealed the average woman has had 10 sexual partners in her life-time,  but many are less than honest about it.

Some 40 percent admitted they have lied about their number, a figure that increases to 53 percent in the over 60s. In contrast, two thirds (66 percent) of women between 16 and 29 said they always tell the truth.

Almost a quarter (22 percent) said they didn’t want to tell others their ‘magic number’ because they felt people would judge them for it. A further 19 percent specified that they were afraid their friends would look down on them.

Seven percent felt they would feel slut-shamed by men, while another seven percent thought the judgement would come from fellow women.

Shockingly, more than half of women (51 percent) have never had a sexual health check up, a figure that increases to 83 percent for over 60s. The younger generation is more health conscious, with only a third (34 percent) of 16 to 29 saying they have never been checked for Sexually Transmitted Infections.

Almost three quarters (72 percent) of those who admitted never heading to the doctors say this was simply because they never felt they needed to. Over one in ten (12 percent) had never had a check-up because they have never had unprotected sex, but six percent were too embarrassed and 4 percent too scared.

The study also revealed that we’re taking big risks with our health when we do get some action.  Four out of five (81 percent) women surveyed, admitted to  having had unprotected sex at some point in their lives.

One in ten did so because they didn’t have any contraception on them, while 15 percent confessed to not caring about it because they were drunk at the time.  Ten percent only use contraception if they’re single and/or having a one night stand and five percent added that they felt pressured into it by their partner.

Megan commented on the partnership: “I think it is so important we talk about sex and sexual health.  It really shocked me that over fifty per cent of women have never had a sexual health test.  It’s so important to practise safe sex and take care of yourself.  I always get tested at the start of any new relationship.”

Megan continued “When I heard the results of the study and that women are lying about the number of people they are sleeping with it made me a bit sad.  Come on people, we’re living in the 21st century, people shouldn’t have such a big problem with the fact that both men and women can enjoy sex.  How are we ever going to change things and increase awareness of safe sex if people are too scared to talk about the number of people they’ve slept with?”

Woo Woo founder Lucy Anderson commented on the research: “Woo Woo is on a mission to make women’s sex lives better.  It’s time to call an end to bad sex, and the sexist and outdated attitudes to women’s sexuality and sexual activity.  These outdated attitudes to women’s sexuality and sexual activity, is one of the reasons women don’t talk as openly as they should about their sexual health, and is costing them their future fertility and in some cases their lives.

“Megan has been such a positive role model for young women since leaving the Island, in particular speaking out against the negativity of body and slut-shaming. Woo Woo hopes by running this campaign that that we’ll not only raise awareness of the importance of self-care and sexual health but also make it easier for young women to talk more openly if they have any sex or sexual health concerns.  We want to start conservations that will help woman feel more comfortable talking about their sexual health less worried about their sexual history and more focused on enhancing their sexual pleasure.”

Love Island star Mike Thalassitis found dead aged 26
THE reality star, 26, was found in a woodland near his home in Essex yesterday.

The 26-year-old’s sudden death comes just months after one of his best friends, Danny Cutts, passed away in December.  His manager confirmed the shock news yesterday. The cause of his death is not yet known and police are yet to release any information.

It has also been suggested that Mike was struggling to come to terms with the death of his grandmother. The reality TV star had moved in with the 94-year-old after her deteriorating health meant she needed a full time carer.
