The Drinks Are On The Pauling Horse

At Market Rasen its risky bet time with Ben Pauling’s Scotch On Da Rocks carrying a few quid of mine in the 3.19pm, a two and a half mile maiden hurdle. In a sport that can be thoughtless and cut -throat on occasion, the connections of the now seven-year-old have shown remarkable patience – and deep pockets.

The winner of a Mollington point-to-point on his debut in April 2021, he was sold on for £80,000 less than two weeks later – and was then off the track for close to three years. Returning after wind surgery at Doncaster in early March, his hurdling left a lot to be desired and to no great surprise he weakened from three out to be beaten 37 lengths at the line, but if he improves as hoped for that experience, he could be the surprise package here.
