12/1 Stars ready to shine at Taunton

Stars Du Granits has been given a massive chance by the handicapper and looks well worth an interest at 12/1 in the 3.00 at Taunton.

Venetia Williams’ gelding was a useful juvenile back in 2010, when he was rated 135 and ran in a Grade 1 Fred Winter at the Cheltenham Festival.

Injury then saw him spend 617 days on the sidelines before making his comeback in a Grade 3 contest at Newbury won by Empire Levant.   He fell four out that day after making mistakes, and fared no better next time out over fences when coming to grief at the fifth.

The six-year-old then ran a shocker when never travelling at all in a handicap hurdle at Sandown, but showed much more sparkle on his penultimate start last season at Haydock.

Although he was eventually beaten 30 lengths when coming 8th of 11 to Timesawastin he ran far better than his finishing position suggest having travelled strongly on the heels of the leaders before weakening four from home.

He was well-backed on the back of that effort to land a handicap hurdle at Plumpton when last seen in action back in April, but after leading for much of the 2m 5f trip he weakened quickly after getting headed two out to finish a disappointing fourth of 7 to Sircozy off a mark of 117.

The handicapper has since dropped him another 7lb to a mark of 110, and that gives him outstanding claims at the weights on his 2010 form.

This looks a very winnable race if he can bounce back, and given his relatively lightly-raced profile it would be no surprise to see him do so now that the assessor has cut him some slack.

Daily Sport recommended bet: 2pts each-way Star Du Granits (12/1 bet365, Stan James – BOG)
