14/1 Spykes can keep the Wolves at Bay

Spykes Bay has slipped to a career-low mark and looks worth an interest at 14/1 to take advantage in the 7.45 at Wolverhampton tonight.

Elaine Burke’s gelding scored on his debut her as a juvenile when rallying bravely to beat Rio Grande by a head.

He then ran very well on his seasonal reappearance in a listed mile event at Lingfield back in April when showing plenty of pace to chase the leaders before being unable to find any extra two from home as lack of race fitness took it’s toll and weakening to finish fourth of 5 to Talwar.

The son of Speighstown has failed to trouble the judge in three subsequent starts in handicaps, but having started life off on a rating of 78 has now dropped down to 72 as a result.

He also didn’t run too badly two starts back when fourth of 8 to at Haydock over an inadequate 6f and the return to 7f and the polytrack surface looks sure to see him in a far better light.

It’s certainly interesting that connections are switching him back to the all-weather for the first time since his debut success, and with the highly talented apprentice Michael Metcalfe taking another 3lb off his back he looks very well weighted if bouncing back to his best.

I certainly don’t think he is a 14/1 chance if doing so, and actually had him priced up at around the 8/1 mark.

Daily Sports recommended bet: 2pts each-way Spykes Bay (14/1 Betfred, Boylesports, Hills – BOG)
