16/1 Compton fancied to cash-in on career low mark

Compton runs of a career low mark in the 8.40 at Kempton tonight and looks worth an each-way wager at 16/1 now fitted with the eye shields for the first time.

Robert Cowell’s charge hasn’t been at his best this season, but his handicap mark has plummetted as a result and having started the campaign off on a mark of 95 is now running off just 78.

That gives him a massive chance at the weights judged on the pick of his form last season, and he is now 12lb lower than when registering his last success on soft ground in a class 3 7f contrest at Ascot 12 months ago.

He followed that win with a cracking one length fourth of 26 to Jack Dexter in an ultra competitive class 2 contest at the same venue off a mark of 93, and that form looks extremely strong in the context of this class 4 contest.

The four-year-old has also run a couple od dceent races this season to show that he is not a spent force, most notably when 7th of 15 to Mass Rally in a class 2 6f contest at York off 95 and when 7th of 16 to Arctic Feeling in the same grade over 6f at Epsom off 93.

If he can come back to anywhere near his best then he is potentially thrown-in at the weights off his current mark, and if the fitting of the eye shields can spark him back to life then he has to go close in this from a good draw in stall 4.

Daily Sport recommended bet: 2pts each-way Compton (16/1 BetVictor, Boylesports, Stan James – BOG)
