16/1 Donncha appeals at Ascot

Donncha has a decent record at Ascot and looks worth siding with at 16/1 in the Balmoral Handicap there today (4.25).

Robert Eddery’s five-year-old has finished in the frame in three of his five starts at the track, including when a solid fourth in this race 12 months ago.

Although now 3lb higher in the weights Donncha comes into the contest on the back of three solid efforts and showed that he could be competitive off his current rating of 100 when a 2/14 length third of 29 to Franklin D at Goodwood on his penuultinate outing.

Donnacha was also far from disgraced last time out when a close-up eighth behind Librisa Breeze over 7f at this venue and will appreciate the step back up to 1m over which he has notched three of his five career successes.

The booking of Pat Smullen to do the steering also catches the eye and Donncha has a good record in big field handicaps and can usually be relied up to run his race.

Daily Sport recommended bet: 2pts each-way Donncha (16/1 generally available – use BOG firms)
