9/1 Axiom an ace bet at Lingfield

Axiom has slipped to a very dangerous mark and is strongly fancied at 9/1 to take advantage in the 3.55 at Lingfield today.

Ed Walker’s charge hasn’t won since August 2010, that win came off 99 and he put in a series of creditable efforts last year off higher marks.

The gelding finished a highly creditable fourth of 21 to Sweet Lightning in the Lincoln off a mark of 101 ,and an excellent second of 15 to Captain Ramius off 96.

He now runs off a mark of just 89, and has shaped better than his form figures suggest in his last three starts.

The eight-year-old caught the eye three starts ago when keeping on well from off the pace to finish a never nearer 2 3/4 length sixth of 10 to Jacob Cats over a mile at Newmarket off a mark 97 on his first run after a break.

He was not knocked about, and then ran a similar race next time up when keeping on to be fourth of 7 to Moone’s My Name at headquarters.

The son of Pivotal could then never get competitive last time out when 16 of 26 to Jack Dexter at Ascot, but he was not knocked about and this is less competitive.

Although yet to win at today’s track, he has finished runner-up on both his starts at it.

The latest of those came back in March when he was beaten 1 3/4 lengths by George Guru, and he now meets that rival on 19lb better terms.

Daily Sport recommended bet: 3pts each-way Axiom (9/1 Stan James) – BOG)
