Arecibo the ace in the Stewards’ Cup pack

Arecibo is at the top of his game at present and makes plemty of appeal at 16/1 in the Stewards’ Cup at Goodwood today (3.40).

This four-year-old had some fair form in France and was allotted an opening handicap mark of 100 at the start of this season after joining David O’Meara.

He failed to trouble the judge in his first three starts but then took advantage of a drop in the weights to score at Ayr over 5f when quickening up nicely and only having to be pushed out to cosily beat Harome by a neck off a mark of 91.

Arecibo then ran well when turned out quickly under a 5lb penalty when staying on strongly to go down by 1 1/4 lengths to Bossipop over 6f at Ripon.

He backed that up with a cracking 1/2 length secomd of 14 to the thriving Only Spoofing at Ascot over 5f eight days ago.

Arecibo got hampered at the start but then cruised into contention and looked all over the winner at the furlomg marker until being unable to find any extra close home.

He is due to go up 4lb to 97 in the future for that fine effort but is able to race in this off 96 – so is 1lb well-in at the weights.

Arecibo will also appreciate the step back up to 6f and this race should be run to suit.

Daily Sport recommended bet: 2pts each-way Arecibo (16/1 Betfair, BetVictor, Coral, Ladbrokes, Paddy Power – BOG, paying 1/5 the odds 6 places)
