As we have come to expect it was a night of surprises in the second round of the Carling Cup last night, and this evening Sheffield Wednesday look value at 11/2 provide another shock.
The problem with this competition is that potential Premiership strugglers who don’t want really to progress but focus instead on their survival in the top flight field weakened sides against motivated opposition.
The result is often a win for a team from the lower league, as MK Dons and Rochdale proved last night when beating Norwich and QPR respectively.
For that reason Wednesday have to be worth a small punt at 11/2 with Coral to win their away tie against under pressure Blackburn (8pm KO).
So far this season Rovers, who under Steve Kean they have mastered the art of relegation form, are zip from two games and the Ewood Park faithful will vote with their wallets and feet for tonight’s fixture.
First division Wednesday have only made an average start to the season winning at home but losing away. However for the match tonight there is every chance that they will have as many supporters in the ground as the home side and that may count for plenty.
They are also likely to be relishing the game more than the home side, who look and club in turmoil and destined for relegation after just two games.
Therefore at the odds on offer, Wednesday have to be worth a small bet to beat Blackburn side who have done little to justify their price of 4/7 to win this.
