Dereck Chisora 15-2 ( 9 KO’s) controversially lost a split decision to Finland’s Robert Helenius 17-0 (11 KO’s) for the vacant European Heavyweight title in front of Helenius’ home fans Chisora put on the performance of his life against the tall Fin taking him the distance for the first time in his career.
The Londoner was rocked in the 1st round by a big shot from Helenius with the Fin claiming he’d hurt his had from the shot. Dereck landed lots of hard clean shots throughout the fight by just couldn’t find the big one to stop Helenius and claim the title.
Two judges ruled it 115-113 for Helenius, while the third judge scored it 115-113 for Chisora. Helenius said “This was the toughest fight of my life”. Chisora upset to say the least by the decision said “I won this fight, no doubt about it,” “I took the fight to him and I should have won.”
Promoter Wilfried Sauerland said he will negotiate a rematch. “It was a lucky win for Robert,” he stated. “We will offer Chisora a rematch but first Robert has to make his mandatory defence against Dimitrenko.”
