Cliffs Of Moher the Champion Stakes value

Cliffs Of Moher looks decent value at 11/1 in the Champion Stakes at Ascot today (3.50).

Aidan O’Brien’s three-year-old ran a blinder to finish a 3/4 length runner-up to stable companion Wings Of Eagles in the Investec Derby at Epsom, where he had Cracksman a neck behind in third.

He then shaped far better than the result suggests when fourth to Ulysses in the Coral-Eclipse at Sandown, getting badly hampered and nearly came down 7f out before keeping on to be nearest at the finish and beaten 4 1/2 lengths when sent off the 7/4 favourite.

Cliffs Of Moher was then ridden too agressively when fourth of seven to Ulysses in the Group 1 Juddmonte International at York before enduring a nightmare passage when sixth of 10 to Decorated Knight in the Irish Champion Stakes at Leopardstown last time out.

He was making stealthy headway on the inside two from home and travelling strongly when denied a clear run in the latter, and again got badly hampered inside the last.

At the death he was staying on well under a hands an heels ride to be beaten 3 3/4 lengths and to me he finsihed with plenty of running left in him and would have gone close to winning granted a clear passage.

I think he is overpriced in this if the cards drop right especially in relation to Cracksman on his run in the Derby as I don’t think the drop back in trip is ideal for that rival.

Daily Sport recommended bet: 2pts each-way Cliffs Of Moher (11/1 Coral – BOG)
