The big betting race of the day is the Great St Wilfrid at Ripon (3.30), and Confessional looks decent each-way value at 22/1.
Tim Easterby’s gelding has become dangerously well-treated, and althougfh not the easiest to win with is a useful sort whne things do go to plan.
The seven-year-old’s last success came off a mark of 94 on good-to-soft at Haydock last September, where he ran on strongly to beat Harrison George by 3/4 of a length.
Confessional went on to finish a highly creditable 2 1/4 length fourth of 16 to Demora in a competitive contest at the same venue off amark of 100, and now gets into this off 92.
That is 2lb lower than when last successful, and gives Confessional every chance at the weights on the pick of his form.
The son of Dubawi has also shaped well in all his last three starts, and seems to be coming to the boil nicely.
In the first of he stayed on well to finish fourth of 13 to Robot Boy in the Gosforth Park Cup at Newcastle, and then backed that up with an excellent 2 1/4 length second to Kimbrella at Chester.
Confessional now meets the winner on 6lb better terms, and that may well enable him to turn the tables in a race which will be run to suit on ground that will be ideal.
I certainly don’t think that he should be available to back at double the odds of that rival, and everything looks in place for a big run.
Daily Sport recommended bet: 2pts each-way Confessional (22/1 Coral – enhanced place terms 1/4 odds 1,2,3,4,5)
