Diego Costa’s emphatic start to the season has prompted Sky Bet to open betting on him breaking the Premier League goalscoring record, with the Chelsea striker 4/1 to enter the history books in his first campaign by scoring 35 goals.
The 25-year-old took his tally to seven goals in just four appearances with a hat-trick in Saturday’s 4-2 victory over Swansea and, while Andrew Cole and Alan Shearer’s joint record of 34 goals is some way off, the online bookmaker are wary of taking on the Spain international.
Costa is now just 10/11 to be top goalscorer in his debut campaign with Sergio Aguero considered his biggest rival for the accolade at 9/2, while Chelsea continue to shorten in the Premier League outright betting at 8/13, followed by Manchester City (100/30).
Sky Bet’s Jamie Munro said: “If Costa continues to score at the current rate of 1.75 goals a game he’ll almost double the record and, while that is obviously extremely unlikely, this Chelsea team is perfectly set up to serve a powerful striker like him.
“His injury problems and the likelihood of rotation are probably the biggest concerns, while it’s worth bearing in mind that Cole and Shearer set their records during the Premier League’s 42-game format days, but we still think he has a great chance.”
