Steelcut runs off a career-low mark in the 2.30 at Wolverhampton today and is strongly fancied at 5/1 to take advantage of what looks a golden opportunity for him to notch another success at the track.
Mark Buckley’s nine-year-old has won five times at the track, with four of those successes coming over today’s 5f trip.
He has not scored since landing a 5f contest at Lingfield in June of last year where he kept on strongly to beat Wooden King by a neck off 68, but has posted some solid efforts to finish in the frame and now gets into this off just 59.
Among those efforts was decent third of 13 to the progressive Burren View Lady over 6f at this venue four starts back, where he showed plenty of pace to chase the leaders and after being ridden to lead inside the last only weakened close home to be beaten a length off a mark of 60.
That contest had a stronger look to it than today’s and although he has failed to run up to that level in his last three starts they have all been over 6f and he is better over the minimum trip.
Nine of his 13 career successes have come over today’s 5f trip, and judged on his run behind Burren View Lady he is weighted to take all the beating in this.
He also goes well for Martin Dwyer and from a good draw in stall 2 everything looks in place for a massive run in a contest severely lacking any strength in depth.
