London super-middleweight George Groves retained his WBA strap and gained the IBO one in the process after beating Chris Eubank Jr in Manchester last night, catapulting Groves into the FINAL of the World Boxing Super Series against the winner of fellow Brit Callum Smith and seasoned German Jurgen Braehmer [Feb 24] with the prestigious Ali Trophy up for grabs.

Groves took control from the off and showed his experience keeping Eubank Jr on his JAB for most of the bout.

Eubank Jr hampered by a badly cut right eye in the 3rd never looked like winning the it and going into the closing rounds he needed a stoppage to win.

Groves DROPPED Eubank Jr in the 10th but the ref ruled it no knock down.

All credit to Eubank Jr though for being game and helping give BOXING fans a great nights entertainment.

Groves took the fight over the 12 round distance on the judges scorecards 117-112, 116-112 and 115-113 all in favour ‘The Saint’, the first score 117-112 was more like the fight I watched.

“The better man won on the night,” Groves told DAILY SPORT Boxing. “Credit to Junior for getting through 12 rounds, I didn’t think he would. Chris didn’t lie when he said he was going to grit it out. That was a terrific fight for the fans.”

“I couldn’t see out of my right eye for most of the fight but a cut’s a cut and you have to deal with it,” said Eubank Jr.

“George has got the heart of a true champion and did what he had to do. I thought I did enough in the later rounds to win it. But hopefully, we’ll get the rematch on.”

After the fight Groves was taken to hospital to get an examination of a suspected dislocated shoulder which he fought within the last and most dramatic of the 12 rounds.

“My shoulder feels pretty sore but I wasn’t going to let anything beat me tonight.”

Was also good to see that #TeamSauerland hadn’t bowed down to the PC brigade and got rid of the Ring Girls.

DAILY SPORT says – Looks like being an all BRITISH final between Groves and Smith which after his recent form you’d have to fancy Groves to take the TROPHY as I thought at the start of the tournament.
