Hero’s Call appeals at 8s

Hero’s Call caught the eye last time out and looks worth an each-way interest at 8/1 in the 4.10 at Plumpton today.

Julian Smith’s mare hinted that she had some ability when 6th of 14 to African Broadway on her second start over hurdles, and din’t run too badly on her handicap debut when staying on late to finish a never nearer 8th of 15 to Western Kate at Newton Abbott from a stiff opening mark of 90.

She then failed to cut any ice in her next two starts before running far better than her finishing position suggest at Taunton last time out when 6th of 14 to Jupiter Rex.

Although eventually beaten 46 lengths, she was tenderly handled and raced very wide throughout the contest and never placed to get competitive at any stage despite making some headway from the rear before weakening three from home.

It was an effort which suggested she could be capable of winning a race of this nature, and having been dropped a further 6lb in the weights she is now on a realistic mark.

The eight-year-old is now 15lb lower than what she started life off on in handicaps, and I think that gives her every chance of being competitive in this if she can build on the promise she showed last time up and is given a more positive ride by Wayne Hutchinson.

Daily Sport recommended bet: 2pts each-way Hero’s Call (8/1 generally available – use BOG firms)
