Mayhem in Magdeburg

In a real twist to their eagerly awaiting re-match last night Robert Stieglitz was this time the victor after Arthur Abraham sustained a large swelling from a big punch in the second round which closed the left eye and after battling on like a true warrior in the third the doctor called a halt to the bout at the end of that round. WE will now be looking at a rubber match as both guys have one a piece.

So watch this space for Abraham v Stieglitz III which is sure to be a draw in Europe and prove once and for all who is the best of the 2 super-middleweights.

On the undercard British super-middleweight George Groves got his second win in 2 weeks since switching to Matchroom with a second round stoppage of Syrian Baker Barakat. Groves now 18-0 will be looking to build on this and a world title shot must definitely be on the cards in due course. The Londoner’s next outing will be on the undercard of Froch v Kessler II at London’s O2 in May.

Groves must be glad to have got sound rounds under his belt again albeit a few short ones, but that is better than any gym work out.

Last night also saw the return of heavyweight Robert Helenius who faced Brit Michael Sprott in a 10 rounder which Helenius won comfortably on points 98-93, 97-93 and 98-92. Helenius who is now No.1 in the WBO rankings will surely now be eyeing a crack at the world title and the money and glory that would come with it.
