Momkin makes plenty of appeal in Thoroughbred

Momkin has posted some decent efforts this season and makes plenty of appeal in the Group 3 Thoroughhbred Stakes at Goodwood today (2.25).

This Roger Charlton trained colt won one of his three starts as a juvenile and ran very well on seasonal reappearance when runner-up in the Group 3 Craven Stakes over a mile at Newmarket.

Momkin found himself short of room at the vital stage inside the final furlong but, when finally getting some space, ran on strongly to go down by just a neck to Skardu.

The winner has on to finish a fine third in the 2000 Guineas at Newmarket, fourth in the Irish equivalent at The Curragh, and a close up 1 1/2 lengths fourth to Circus Maximus in the Group 1 St James’s Palace Stakes.

That gives the form a strong look and Momkin himself was also far from disgraced when 10th to Magna Grecia in the 2000 Guineas.

He has since run veru well to finish 3 3/4 length sixth of 18 to Space Blues in the Gruup 3 Jersey Stakes at Royal Ascot where he was unlucky not to hit the frame at least after getting hampered two form home when travelling well before inding himself short of room at the furlong marker.

It was a fine effort given how the race panned out and the form reads well in relation to this given that Space Blues has since chased home subsequentSussex Stakes winner Too Darn Hot in a Group 1 in France.

Momkin also didn’t get the clearest of runs last time out when a 2 1/2 lenngth runner-up to Duke Of Hazzard in the Listed 1m Sir Henry Cecil Stakes at Newmarket, yet can be backed at double the odds of that rival.

So with Oisin Muprhy niow partnering him for the first time, I think he is well worth an each-way wage in a wide-open rebewal.

Daily Sport recommended bet: 2pts each-way Momkin (13/2 bet365, BetVictor – BOG)
