Cardinal runs off his lowest mark in four years in the 5.25 at Nottingham today and with underfoot conditions to suit makes plenty of appeal at 12/1.
Robert Cowell’s charge is a four time winner on the turf, and three of those wins have come on soft ground.
In the last of those he beat Interakt in the class 4 contest in the mud at Sandown off a mark of 71, and he went on to score off 69 on the all-weather surface at Wolverhampton in January 2013.
The nine-year-old now gets into this off just 64, and although he has not been at his best in his last two starts, the veteran showed he retained plenty of ability on seasonal reapperance when finishing a 1 1/4 length runner-up to Taurus Twins over course and distance in the class 5 handicap on good-to-soft ground off 3lb higher.
He looks well-treated judge on that effort now dropped into class 6 company for the first time since October 2010, especially as he has the going that he relishes.
Cardinal has also bagged a good draw in stall 15, and in what doesn’t look a strong contest looks well worth an each-way wager at the odds on offer.
