Pontefract Preview – Macie looks ace at 16/1

Madam Macie has been given a massive chance by the handicapper and looks terrific each-way value at 16/1 in the 4.00 at Pontefract.

David O’Meara’s filly was a progressive sort last season, and looked the type to go on to better things when slamming Gener Autry by 4 1/2 lengths over 7f at Haydock on her third start off a mark of 79.

She showed terrific early pace that day and forged clear a furlong from home to win easing down.

The daughter of Bertolini was sent off a heavily backed 7/1 second favourite for a hot 6f sprint at York on the back of that effort, and was far from disgraced off a 10lb higher mark in finishing 8th of 20 to Victoire De Lyphar after being unable to get to the front.

She then contested a listed 7f event at Warwick on her final start, and after leading until 3 out kept on well despite being hampered to finish a 4 1/4 length sixth of 9 to Luca Cumani’s classy Seta.

This season she has run just twice, but has shown enough to me to make her of interest today despite being well beaten on both occasions.

She looked badly in need of the run when well behind Shesastar in a 7f contest at York on her reappearance, and still looked as if she would improve for the outing when behind Electra Star at Ascot on her latest start 12 days ago.

That run came over a mile, and what was encouraging was that she showed all her old dash to lead until the two marker before fading out of contention.

She should now be cherry ripe to do herself justice, and it looks significant that connections are dropping her back down to 6f this afternoon.

To me that looks a shrewd move, and if she can get away well from a wide draw in 9 and grab the lead she will be extremely difficult to peg back.

Given the fact that she is now only 1lb higher than her last impressive win at Hyadock, and has been contesting better contests than this there is no doubt in my mind that she should be shorter than 16/1.

Recommended bet: 2pts each-way Madam Macie (16/1 Stan James)
