Rodrigo handicapped to strike at Lingfield

Rodrigo De Freitas has slipped to a career low mark and looks worth chancing at 11/1 in the finale at Lingfield today (3.30).

Jim Boyle’s gelding is a frustrating sort who often flatters to deceive, but there is no doubt that the handicapper has given him a huge chance of landing this if putting his best foot forward.

The four-year-old is now down to to a mark of just 55 – 3lb lower than when registering the only success of his career at Windsor last October.

Since then he has run well and been placed of marks in the 60s, and he signalled as if his time could be near again when an eye-catching fifth of 13 to Hurricane Hymnbook here last time out.

Held up well off the pace that day, he stayed on well under pressure from a furlong from home to be beaten just over seven lengths, and the way he was finishing suggested that today’s extra couple of furlongs would suit.

Another plus is that Eddie Ahern takes over in the saddle from the 7lb claimer who rode him that day, and given that he is a tricky customer it looks a wise move.

Ahern has ridden the horse twice before – finishing fifth in two decent contests – and should now know how to get the best out of him.

I had the Rodrigo priced up at 8s for this, so the 11/1 generally available looks too big to resists for such a well treated horse – albeit a quirky one.

Daily Sport recommended bet: 2pts each-way Rodrigo De Freitas (11/1 generally available – use BOG firms)
