San Pietro worth siding with at Southwell

San Pietro is an interesting contender now stepped up in trip on handicap debut in the 2.55 at Southwell today and looks worth siding with at 8/1.

The gelding had some fairly useful form in bumpers in Ireland when trained by Jim Dreaper, most notably when fourth of 14 to Racing Pulse at Naas.

He also won a point over 3m at Lingstown back in November in good style by 8 lengths, and then joined trainer Richard Ford.

Although he has yet to cut any ice in two starts for his new handler following an 86 day break, both those runs have come over an inadequate trip of 2m 1f.

San Pietro appeals as the type that will do better now going down the handicap route, and an opening mark of 102 should not be beyond him based on his bumper form.

The step back up to 3m, over which he won his point, is also a massive plus and with Harry Challenor in the saddle taking 3lb off his back San Pietro looks on a potentially handy mark in what is a weak class 4 contest.

Daily Sport recommended bet: 2pts win San Pietro (8/1 bet365, BetVictor, Stan James, William Hill – BOG)
