Last night at London’s York Hall saw Wales Lee Selby defend his British and Commonwealth Featherweight title against Scot John Simpson. The fight started well with the better quality shots coming from Selby however Simpson did get through with the odd shot of his own. Then in the 5th Selby landed a thundering left hook to the body sending Simpson to the canvas he made the count but was stopped by ref Marcus McDonnell so a good TKO win for Selby who retained his belts in just over 2 minutes of the 5th.

In a good undercard featuring a last minute addition to the bill with Southern Area Middleweight champ Billy Joe Saunders defending his title against Tommy Tolan who he stopped in the 1st will Ref Jeff Hinds saying Tolan was in no fit state to continue 1 minute into the fight a premature stoppage in my opinion.

Results in brief – Canning Town Welter Freddie Turner fought Kevin McCauley over 6 rounds winning on points 60-54 and Light-welter George Michael Carman from Slough be Crawley’s Robin Deaking on points over 4 rounds with Deakin having a point deducted in the last round by Ref Jeff Hinds although I did see any reason for this, but Carman got the decision 40-35.

And in the KO of the night West Drayton’s Steve O’Meara retained his Southern-Area Light-Middle title stopping Thamesmead’s Nathan Weise with a great left right combination to which Weise hit the deck out cold with Ref Ken Curtis immediately stopping the fight. This has to be one of O’Meara’s best performances to date. Weise was taken to hospital but was released soon after and is now 100% OK.

I sat ringside with 2 fighters to watch in 2012 Dean “Irish Lightning” Byrne and Frankie Bulglioni both who are rearing to go and there sights set on some great fights in the coming year.

Daily Sport says – All in all a good night sboxing with some great stoppages.
