Steamboat Bill looks nicely treated on handicap debut in the 3.40 at Punchestown today and makes plenty of appeal at 14/1.

Gordon Elliott’s gelding has progressed in four runs over hurdles, and opened his account over the obstacles when comning from off the pace and staying on strongly to beat Stowaway Shark by 1/2 a length at Down Royal.

Stowaway Shark has won since and finished runner-up to the well-regarded Coney Island to be rated 121, and the pair pulled 31 lengths clear of the field.

The third home Billy Billy also went on to score next time up by 27 lengths and is now rated 124.

That gives the form a strong look and suggests Steamboat Bill has got in lightly off an opening handicap mark of 119.

He also looks the type who should have plenty more to offer, and hails from a yard which landed a big handicap at the track yesterday.
