The Pentagon looks worth a punt at 7/1 now dropped back in class and stepped up in trip in the Group 2 Great Voltigeur Stakes at York today (3.00).

Aidan O’Brien’s colt has some very smart for as a juvenile when winning twice and finishing a fine third to stable companion and subesquent 2000 Guineas winner Saxon Warrior in the Group 1 Racing Post Trophy at Doncaster.

He looked the tupe that would coke into his own as a three-year-old but has failed to get his head in front in four starts this season.

However, he did run well on the second of those when a length third to Hazapour in a Group 3 over 1m 2f at Leopardstown and then had excuses when a well beaten eight of 12 to Masar in the Group 1 Investec Derby at Epsom.

There was also lots to like about his latest effort in the Irish equiavelent of the latter over 1m 4f at the Curragh when fifth of 12 to Latrobe, where after being held-up and forced to race wide he got outpaced before staying on strongly to be gaining all the way to the line and beaten 3 3/4 lenths.

That run suggsted he was crying out for a step up in trip, and he now gets an extra two furlongs to tackle. He has always struck me as a stayer so it makes him a facsinating contender in this lower grade Group 2 affair.

He also gets a handy 5lb from stable companion Kew Gardens adn I think he is the pick of the O’Brien quartet in this.

So at the odds on offer, and 1/4 odds each-way three places available with bet365, The Pentagon makes plenty of each-way appeal.

Daily Sport recommended bet: 2pts each-way The Pentagon (7/1 bet365 – BOG, 1/4 odds 1,2,3)
