Time to get Lucky with 16/1 Dan

Joe Fanning is an eye-catching booking to partner Lucky Dan in the 5.00 at Wolverhampton and Paul Green’s charge looks worth an interest at 16/1.

Fanning has only partnered the seven-year-old on two occasions, and that resulted in back-to-back wins at Chester and Carlisle last summer of marks of 63 and 70.

The gelding has since been partnered by four different jockeys in five subsequent runs and was last successful three starts back in a handicap at this track over 7f off a mark of 74.

To me that is not his best trip and he needs a strongly run 6f to be seen at his best.

He is likely to get that today, and he is also a tricky customer who takes a bit of understanding and Fanning clearly knows how to get the best out of him.

Although he is yet to win off his current mark of 76 he has won several times off 74 – including over course and distance – and it doesn’t look beyond him in a race which should be run to suit.

He also has a decent draw to exploit in stall 4 from where he should be able to tuck into in behind the pace and get a good tow into the race before being delivered late, and at the odds on offer I think he is overpriced and well worth an each-way punt.

Daily Sport recommended bet: 2pts each-way  win Lucky Dan (16/1 Hills, Stan James – BOG)
