Voodoo value at 12s to cast a spell over rivals

Voodoo Prince is on a handy mark at present and with conditions to suit looks worth wager at 12/1 in the 2.55 at Newbury today.

Ed Dunlop’s charge showed improved form after winning a handicap over 1m 2f at Ripon last August off 85 on soft ground, winding up his season with a fine third of 23 to Art Scholar in the 1m 4f November Handicap at Doncatser off a mark of 95.

He held every chance approaching the final furlong that day until being unable to find an extra close home to be beaten 1 3/4 lengths, and it was an effort which suggested he had more to offer.

The son of Kingmambo then had little difficulty scoring on his reappearance in a conditions event at Ripon back in April off an official rating of 97 where he showed a nice turn of foot to take up the running a furlong from home before keeping on well to beat Northside Prince with more in hand than the winning margin of a length suggests.

Although he then subsequently failed to back that up when a well-beaten 9th of 10 to Mijhaar at Hamilton his run was too bad to be true that day and something was clearly amiss.

He then shaped far better at Windsor when staying on to finish a never nearer fifth of 9 to Rawaki having been given plenty to do and has since backed that up with two solid efforts.

In the first of those he kept on from off the pace to finish fourth to Cat O’Mountain on the all-weather at Kempton, and he then looked to be coming right back to his best when third of 9 to Forgotten Hero at Doncaster 7 days ago.

He tracked the leaders in the latter before leading at the furlong marker and then kept on well when headed to be beaten just 1/2 a length.

It was an effort which suggested it would not be long before he was back in the winners’ enclosure and although he has to race off 1lb higher today (92) that mark looks exploitable on the pick of his form and he has underfoot conditions to suit.

Daily Sport recommended bet: 2pts each-way Voodoo Prince (12/1 bet365, Hills – BOG)
