Chester Cup (2.45): Tominator can strike for Jonjo

The big betting race of the day and Jonjo O’Neill’s Tominator makes plenty of each-way appeal at 10/1.

The gelding won the Northumberland Plate in 2011 and came back to form when landing a 1m 5f contest at this track last September where he stayed on strongly to beat Communicator by a neck off a mark of 96 over a trip which is plenty sharp enough for him.

He then ran a cracker to finish a 1/2 a length fourth of 12 to Sir Graham wade in the Mallard at York off 98 before finishing an excellent third of 34 to Aaim To Prosper in the Cesarewitch at Newmarket off the same mark.

The six-year-old has since shown some decent form in winning two of his four starts over hurdles, and his current flat mark of 100 should not be beyond him judged on the pick of his form.

He was well beaten in this contest 12 months ago, but he had not had a good preparation and was running after a lengthy lay-off and I think he has the right profile to go very close this time round.

The ground and trip will certainly hold no fears, and the fact that he does have winning form to his name at the track is a big plus.

The booking of Tom Queally to partner him also catches the eye, and everything looks in place for a big run.

The obvious one to beat is John Quinn’s Countrywide Flame who has developed into a top class hurdlers and returns to the level on what could be a lenient mark.

However he has had a hard season over the sticks and disappointed last time out at Aintree and looks plenty short enough to me at 7/2.

Aidan O’Brien’s Justification also has to be feared given his progressive profile, but of the Irish raiders I feel that Olmpiad may pose the biggest threat to the selection.

Dermot Weld’s charge looked a stayer to follow when scoring at York last August, and remains lightly raced and open to further progress.

If he can overcome his wide draw in stall 17 then I can see him going really well in the hands of Pat Smullen.

Daily Sport recommended bet: 2pts each-way Tominator (10/1 generally available – use BOG firms)
