Payment time at Folkestone

Small fields make it difficult to find any value at Folkestone today but one horse that does look overpriced and worth an each-way play at 14/1 is Downe Payment in the 2.30.

The six-year-old mare has an uninspiring set of form figures to her name but is well treated on her best form and is fitted with cheek-pieces for the first time.

Diana Grissell’s charge started life off in handicaps on a mark of 92 and finished a fair third of 13 to Jordan off 90 at this track back in February.

That race was over 2m 6f and she was up with the pace until weakening gradually out of contention three from home to be beaten 29 lengths.

The way she finished the contest suggested that a drop back in trip to today’s 2m 2f would suit, and she starts this season on a mark of just 78.

That gives her a terrific chance from a handicapping perspective, and if the new headgear has the desired effect then she must go close in this line-up on her best form.
