We said earlier in the week that there was going to FIREWORKS at Wembley Arena and there sure were with a devastating performance by Londoner “Saint” George Groves as Daily Sport reported on Wednesday Groves looked super fit in training as was up for the job, but no one predicted a second round KO of Paul Smith Jnr the first time former British champ Smith has been KO’d in his career. Groves started well and took a few shots from Smith at the end of the first which was pretty level round. Then in second George came out and caught Smith with a big right hand and Smith hit the deck, he made the count but Groves caught him again and it was all over in 1.18 of the second. Great performance by Groves who is improving all the time and definitely a Super-Middle to watch in 2012.
Groves v Smith was the chief support and the headliner between Michael Katsidis and Ricky Burns for the WBO Interim Lightweight Title proved to be an all action fight too. Burns has improved immensely since moving up to Lightweight and land numerous body shots on the Aussie tough guy Katsidis. Who no matter how hard you hit him dosen’t even flinch. The fight went the distance with Burns the victor on all 3 cards 117-112, 117-111 and 117-111. I had Burns in front but by a narrower margin saying that though he proved how comfortable he now is at his new weight. There are certainly some great fights ahead now for the Scot.
Results for the rest of the bill in brief –
Light-Welter Gary Corocran beat Billy Smith on points over 4 round in his pro-debut 40-36, Middleweight Darren Cordona beat Aaron Fox on point 39-38 again a pro-debut, Penge Welter Bradley “Super” Skeete got a 5th round TKO victory over Jay Morris, Welsh Lightweight Luke Robinson beat Sid Razak 39-37 on points, Billy Joe Saunders claimed Gary Boulden’s Southern Area Middleweight Title on points over 10 rounds 99-92 and Welter George Michael Carmen v Tom Bowen ended in a draw 57-57.
Last but not least another pro-debut on the bill was Super-Middle Frankie Buglioni who scored a first round KO victory over Sabie Monteith. Buglioni who had brought a load of support along looks set for a bright career as a pro.
