A good opportunity for British boxing fans to gauge the progress of David Price when he faces off against the domestic gatekeeper “Big” John Mcdermott live on Sky Sports tonight (8pm).

Former super heavyweight and Olympic bronze medalist Price has impressed in the few times we have seen him. He has displayed excellent technique and good power so far, although admittedly he has yet to be tested fully as a professional and there are plenty of videos on YouTube to show that perhaps his chin needs to pass a few tests.

Having said that, let’s not detract from should be an entertaining heavyweight encounter as both lads can crack a bit and it should be fun while it lasts.

We have all seen the best and worst of Mcdermott, and I was unfortunate enough to be at ringside when he fell apart inside a round against Skelton in 2005.

Since then I have constantly doubted him, but he was robbed in the first fight against Fury and impressed me against Larry Olubamwio (stopping him inside a round) and it has to be said that during his career he has been on the wrong end of some bad decisions.

Time catches up on us all he has been around for a while and this potentially could be his toughest opponent he has face perhaps in his career.

I believe Price will look to be on Mcdermott’s case from the opening bell, looking to land big shots and land one of those shots that stopped the unbeaten Tom Dallas two fights ago.

He really needs to make a statement and should he – as I hope –  land a bomb inside of Mcdermott then perhaps he can crack on in 2012 and set his sights on Tyson Fury.
