Master Singer disappointed last time out but looks worth another chance at 16/1 to build on previous promise in the Melrose Stakes at York today (2.25).

John Gosden’s colt shaped really well on his sole start as a juvenile when fourth of 17 to Crowned Eagle at Nottingham in a race which has thrown up a host of subsequent winners.

He then caught the eye in no uncertain fashion when a keeping on third to stable companion Face The Facts at Newbury before bolting up by 16 lengths in a maiden at Newcastle.

Master was allotted an opening handicap mark of 96 on the back of that runway success and backed off the boards from 14/1 into 4/1 favourite to land the 1m 4f King George V Stakes at Royal Ascot.

He was unable to land the plunge, weakening late on after tracking the leaders to finish 11th of 18 to Atty Pearse.

However, such support suggests that connections believe his current mark is exploitable and the fact he holds an entry in the St Leger also suggest he is held in high regard.

The cheekpieces which he wore at Royal Ascot for the first time, and I don’t think helped, are also now discarded and the step up to 1m 6f may well unlock further improvement.

Daily Sport recommended bet: 2pts each-way Master Singer (16/1 bet365, BetVictor – BOG)
