Howman has a progressive profile and looks worth a punt at 6/1 in the 5.15 at Goodwood today now stepped up to a trip which promises to bring about even more improvement.

The Roger Varian trained three-year-old got off the mark at the third time of asking when scoring at Lingfield by 1 1/4 lengths. He then followed up in good style on handicap debut at Yarmouth over 1m 1f when beating Mashasheer by a neck off a mark of 79.

Howman was value for much more than the winning margin as he was given a confident ride by Andrea Atzeni and stayed on strongly to get the job done without being knocked about.

The third home Jazeel has since come out and won off 80 and the fourth home Rapier also scored next time up. It gives the form a solid look despite the small field.

Howman has been raised just 2lb for what I thought was a taking performance and the way in which he finished off the race suggsted he was crying out for a step up in trip.

He gets an extra two frulongs to tackle here and that should be right up his street.

With the favourite Baritone incredibly short in the betting he looks one to take on. Howman fits the bill and a bold bid looks assured.

Daily Sport recommended bet: 2pts each-way Howman (6/1 generally available – use BOG firms)
