Peter Quillin v Craig McEwen

Peter “Kid Chocolate” Quillin makes his debut on UK screens on Sunday morning when Sky Sports insult us boxing fans by showing the Angulo/Kirkland card delayed at 10am (show it live !!!).

The aggressive and very big Quillin (25-0 19kos) has the potential to be huge and has dynamite in his fists and is ready and willing to inflict damage at the first opportunity. He has switched to the famous wild card gym under the tutelage of Freddie Roach and I expect him to gradually become a more well complete fighter given time. His destruction of the capable Jesse Brinkley was impressive to say the least.

On the other hand Craig McEwen (19-1 10kos) is looking to bounce back from his 10th round stoppage loss to Andy Lee. McEwen was ahead on the cards at the time of the stoppage when Lee found a Hail Mary left hook which rendered McEwen incapable of carrying on.

He is a nice boxer and has clearly served his apprentice well in the wild card gym before relocating back to Scotland. I remember watching the Lee fight thinking that if he had decent punching power he would be a world class prospect and sadly McEwen is below true world class level.

Kid Chocolate will have the advantage of being able to walk down McEwen and literally walk through anything that McEwen throws at him. I think this is the brutal coming out party for Quillin and expect him to crush McEwen inside of 4 rounds and this is why at 7-4 this is my best bet of the weekend.

Daily Sport recommended bets:

A MAXIMUM 3 point win Quillin to Ko McEwen – 6/4 generally available

0.25 Quillin to win in round 1 – 25/1 Sky Bet

0.25 Quillin to win in round 2 – 20/1 Sky Bet

Alfredo Angulo v James Kirkland

Even considering Sky feel it’s not worthy of showing live and instead they are showing it on tape delay (10am Sky Sports) this is still a good main event when Alfredo Angulo (20-1 17kos) meets James Kirkland (29-1 26kos) in a WBC world title eliminator.

Don’t make your breakfast or even a quick cuppa because these boys wont hang around! Angulo is an action packed fighter who averages in most fights a whopping 100 punches per round and wants to win and win well and faces his toughest test since his loss to Kermit Cintron.

Kirkland is a big puncher who looks to mix it up for the opening bell. He is a classic boxing bully who is super when he can stand and punch away at a hapless opponent but doesn’t like it when his opponent can stand up to them. He really has been badly brought along and is record is littered with opponents who are nothing better than punchbags and this is why I feel he got devastated in one round by unheralded Nobuiro Ishida of Japan because he never has really advanced from a novice level of opponent.

This will basically boil down to who is man enough to take the big shots. Angulo is a man who can walk through walls to succeed and Kirkland is man whose chin is made of solid China. I fancy Angulo to get the better of his man probably sooner rather than later
Daily Sport recommended bets:

2pts Angulo to ko Kirkland in rounds 1-6 – 6/4 Sky Bet

0.25 Kirkland to win in round 1 – 14/1 Boylesports

0.25 Kirkland to win in round 2  – 13/1 Paddy Power
