Rydan and Queally a potent combination at Goodwood

Rydan shaped as if ahead of his mark last time out and looks cracking value at 13/2 in the 5.25 at Goodwood today now reunited with jockey Tom Queally.

Robert Mills’ colt had some strong form in maidens, most notably when fourth to subsequent Group 3 Royal Ascot winner Cannock Chase at Windsor, and opened his account in good style when scoring on handicap debut over 1m 2f at Sandown last month.

The son of Intense Focus was held-up well off the pace before making steady progress to take up the running deep inside the last and beat Reesha by a cosy 1/2 a length off an opening mark of 80.

The form of the race looks solid with the runner-up Reesha getting touched off by just a short-head next time out and the third home Raise Your Gaze bolting up by 6 lengths on his next outing.

Rydan was put up 6lb for that success, and ran better than his finishing popsition suggest last time out over 1m 2f at Sandown when third to Presburg.

The three-year-old was given a strange ride by Frankie Dettori, racing wide at the rear of the field and being given plenty to do before staying on to be beaten 2 1/4 lengths without ever threatening to land a blow.

To my eyes Dettori got it tactically wrong, and Rydan is now reunited with Tom Queally who gave him a peach of a ride to win on handicap debut.

That is a big plus, and Rydan looks the type who has plenty more to offer and is ahead of his current mark of 86.

The step up to 1m 3f today should also suit, and this doesn’t look the strongest of class 3 contests.

Daily Sport recommended bet: 3pts win Rydan (13/2 Coral – BOG)
